Jiangmen is located in the central southern part of Guangdong Province and at the west wing of the Pearl River Region. It is adjacent to Nanhai in the south and very close to Hong Kong and Macau. The altitude of this city is between N 21°27′~22°51′, while its longitude is between 111°59′~113°15′. The northern end of city reaches Lishui of Gulao Town in Heshan, the southern part reaches Weijia Island of Xiachuan Town in Taishan. The distance between the north and south is around 142.2 kilometers. The eastern end of this city is Daaowei in Xinhui, while its western end is Hakengwei of Naji Town in Enping. The distance between the east and the west is around 130.68 kilometers. The southern part of Taishan, Xinhui and southeastern part of Enping are at the coastal areas of South China Sea with a total coastal line as long as 283.36 kilometers. The total coastal line of all the islands reaches 331.51 kilometers. The total area on-land reaches 9,541 square kilometers taking up only 5.32% of the total city area. The total area of islands is 235.17 square kilometers. The total number of islands with the area over 500 square meters reaches 97. The largest island is Chuandao Island in Taizhou with an area of 137.16 square meters. The second largest island is Xiachuandao Island with an area of 81.73 square kilometers. Jiangmen belongs to the continental shelf area below 200 meters above the sea level, which was originated from Huangmao Sea in the east and Zhenhai Bay in the west with a total area of around 2,257 square kilometers. 

There are 30 different nationality groups residing in this city. The Han group takes up 99.8% of the total city population. There are 29 minority nationality groups such as Zhuang, Yao, Tujia and Mao, etc. The minority population is around 8,000 only taking up 0.2% of the total population. At the end of 2000, the registered permanent households reached 1.108 million with a growth of 19,852 households. The total population was 3.809 million with a growth of 10,100. The male population was 1.939 million and the female population was 1.870 million. The non-agricultural population reached 1.456 million while the non-permanent residents reached 413,446. 

Jiangmen is a modern city with beautiful scenery and the hometown of emigrants. It is famous for its seashore, hot spring, forest and emigrant culture. The Xinhui Guifeng Mountain beauty spot, Kaiping Li Garden, Enping Golden Mountain hot spring recreation spot are national “Four A” tourism beauty spot. The former residence of Liang Qichao and Kaiping blockhouse are the important cultural relics. And Jiangmen has a lot of hot springs including Golden Mountain hot spring, Imperial capital hot spring, Jinjiang hot spring, Taishan hot spring, Gudu hot spring and so on. Enping City was granted a title of “The hot spring hometown of China” by the China Mining Association. The China (Jiangmen) Chinese Emigrants Carnival and the China (Jiangmen) Emigrant Hometown Tourism Festival were the annual great events of tourism, which attract many oversea and domestic people to come to visit.

In recent years, under the direction of a series government development strategy of “Scientific Development and Advanced Competition”, the social and economic development of this city has been very significant. In 2004, the total GDP of this city reached 83.456 billion RMB with a growth by 12.2%. The general government revenue from local jurisdictions reached 2.894 billion RMB with a growth by 18.41%. The total GDP from industries reached 170 billion RMB. The added value created by industries achieved the growth by 17%. The total social investment on fixed assets reached 19.788 billion RMB with a rapid growth by 22.82%. The total social retail income reached 31.157 billion RMB with a growth by 12.1%. The total GDP was ranked in the top list of Guangdong Province. In the past few years, the city construction has also been developing really fast. It has been awarded as “the Model Tourist City of China”, “the Model National Garden City”, “the National Model City on Public Sanitation” etc. Today’s Jiangmen has become a prosperous, harmonious and fast developing modern city.

Jiangmen has several polar industries such as motor and accessory manufacture, metal product, domestic electric appliance, textile and clothes, paper making and paper product and so on. Several national industry bases are also set up here. 

China motor industry demonstration base: Jiangmen is the first city in China which was granted as “China Motor Industry Demonstration Base”. The leading industry, the Great Changjiang River Corporation, produces more than 1 million motors per year and ranks the first places in term of production and sale value, ratal and synthetic economic efficiency.

China (Xinhui) Stainless Steel Product Manufacture Base: in 2003, the Jiangmen stainless steel production reached 81,000 tons, up 17.63%. Most of the enterprises locate in the Siqian town. The leading enterprise, Tianjian Corporation, has fixed investment of more than 1 billion yuan.

China Hardware Toilet and Bathroom Product Manufacture Base: the Duran town in Pengjiang District where most of enterprises locate has 211 enterprises with total product value of 1.8 RMB billion yuan. The products of Mei Biao Xian Hao company and the Ji Shi Duo company occupy 50% of the total high-class market.

The National Torch Project—Jiangmen New Material Manufacture Base: the main body of the new material industry was including textile, chemical production, electronic production, magnetism new material and so on. In 2003, there were 350 new material enterprises with total product value of RMB 12 billion yuan. There are several enterprises including Meiya Corporation, Mei Da Jin Lun Corporation, Caiyan Corporation.

China Textile and Chemical Fiber Manufacture Base: Jiangmen is the traditional textile and chemical fiber manufacture base of Guangdong Province. In 2003, the product value of the textile and clothes enterprises reached RMB 21.96 billion yuan. Kaiping is “China Textile Industry Base”. The Kaiping Terylene Corporation has product value of RMB 4.27 billion yuan. Its affiliated company, Chunhui Company, is a stock company.

Paper making and paper product manufacture base: the product value of paper making and paper product manufacture industry reached RMB 3.718 billion yuan in 2003, up 17.65%. The leading company, Weida Paper Manufacture Company, is one of the biggest life papers making company in China. Yinzhou Lake District was planned as the future papers making base of Jiangmen. Now the Asia and Pacific Paper Corporation with total investment of 1.98 billion US dollar and Indonesia Paper Corporation with total investment of 1 billion US dollar and other big papers making projects have located here.

In order to improve the investment environment, supply service with high quality and efficiency to the investors and gather all of the administrative charge, Jiangmen municipality set up the Administration Center on February in 1997. The Administration Center is consisted of fours things including one office building, one service window, one charge window and one line service, which achieve the aim of convenience, efficiency, order and probity. If all of the material are inclusive and condition is qualified, the normal enterprises only need 7 working days to get the certificate while the productive enterprises need 15 working days.
