The Master of Urban Design (MUD) provides high quality education in the design of the built environment.  The programme meets the continuing education needs of practitioners in the field of urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, transportation engineering, and urban planning. It is a one-year full-time postgraduate programme offered by the Department of Urban Planning and Design in the Faculty of Architecture at The University of Hong Kong.

The program focuses on urban design challenges of cities in Asia and other emerging markets, taking full advantage of its location in Hong Kong, a premium learning space and a living laboratory for urban design.  Through theories and practical examples, the MUD programme explores multiple topics including density, urbanization, health, energy, climate change, etc.  Students acquire skills through a combination of lecture courses, seminars, local and international field trips, studios and thesis.

The programme attracts a diverse body of local and international students.  Many have prior professional experiences in architecture, landscape architecture and urban planning.  Graduates pursue a career as design professionals with access to the world’s most dynamic markets.

The MUD programme at present is the only urban design programme in the region accredited by UK’s Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) under the specialism scheme.  The teaching staff includes leading academics and practitioners in urban design and other disciplines.

Students can also enter the advanced standing route for a dual degree with a waiver of 5 modules in the 2-yr.  Master of Science in Urban Planning programme recognized by the Hong Kong Institute of Planners (HKIP), Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), and Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT).
