Diploma, MA, PhD in Urban & Regional Planning

Entry Requirement: Varies depending on the degree;

Diploma: an undergraduate degree and at least 2 years work experience in planning or planning related fields. To be admitted, applicants must pass an entrance examination

MA: the programme offers 2 options (thesis and non-thesis).

    • Thesis option—applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree preferably in planning, architecture, economics, business administration, engineering, geography, law and public administration. Those with degrees in other fields may also be considered on a case-by-case basis.
    • Non-thesis option—applicants must pass an entrance examination.

PhD:

    • for those with a bachelor’s degree---a general weighted average grade of 1.75. This may be waived if the applicant has work experience of at least 2 years in planning or planning related activities considered acceptable by the SURP Admissions Committee but in no case should the average be lower than 2.0.
    • for those with a master’s degree (in planning and other fields)---a weighted average grade of 1.65. This may be waived if the applicant holds a responsible position in planning or in planning-related fields considered acceptable by the SURP Admissions Committee. However, in no case should the weighted average grade be lower than 1.8.

Course Objectives:
  • to strengthen and assist government agencies and private organisations in studying and solving problems of planning and development;
  • to facilitate the implementation of development proposals at the national, regional and local levels;
  • to provide assistance in the improvement of human settlements and the environment through coordinated and comprehensive development studies and plans; and
  • to make available a pool of professional urban and regional planners to carry out the national policy of comprehensive planning and development.
Course Requirements (assessment modes, no. of modules/courses to be taken): Diploma: complete 4 courses in semester 1 and 3 courses in semester 2. Diploma programme students may apply for admission to the master’s programme after completing the 4 courses required for the 1st semester provided they meet the required weighted average grade.

MA:

    • thesis option---requires 27 units of course work and 6 units of thesis
    • non-thesis option---requires 39 units of course work and a comprehensive examination

PhD: 2 streams:

    • for a holders of a master’s degree in planning---requires only 24 units of course work
    • for those who hold a bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree in non-planning fields---requires 48.

Both options require 12 units of dissertation.
